PDP sweeps Adamawa local elections, opposition alleges electoral fraud

Must Read

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates in Adamawa State have been declared winners of all but one of the 277 seats contested in Saturday's local council election in Adamawa State.

The ruling party's landslide election victory gave it all 21 presidential seats and 255 of the 256 council seats.

The New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) has elected one councillor seat in Demsa Local Government Area as the election followed a nationwide pattern of the ruling party sweeping council elections in the state.

Adamawa elections were conducted on Saturday by the state electoral commission.

A day after the election, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri swore in the new local government chairmen in Yola, the state capital, on Monday.

Speaking at the event, Mr Fintiri congratulated the elected council presidents and described their victories as well-deserved.

“To whom much is given, much is required, so work for the people and be open to them, since the era of absenteeism is over. Always strive to be there for your people.

“This is not a part-time job. As the leader of a level of government close to the people, they must have access to you as much as possible at all times,” the governor said, according to NAN.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and some other opposition parties in the state boycotted the election.

In early June, APC state secretary Raymond Chidama announced that the APC would not participate in the election, alleging that the state electoral commission, ADSIEC, was made up of PDP members.

Furthermore, SDP spokesperson in the state, Ibrahim Karlahi, said that they boycotted the election on the advice of their leader in the state, Umar Ardo.

Mr Karlahi also cited the composition of the electoral body for his party's decision.

“Almost the Chairman-designate and all members of the state electoral commission are registered members of the PDP. In fact, the chairman of the commission is a relative of the governor,” the SDP correspondent said.

The party said local elections in the state are a farce where results are declared without elections.

The SDP cited the previous local elections in April 2022, where ADSIEC, under its then chairperson, Isa Shettima, declared all PDP candidates as winners.

Both the APC and the SDP participated in those elections.

Mr Karlahi said that no elections were held because no materials were brought to any polling unit, adding that the governor personally selected all the PDP presidential candidates who were declared winners of the election.
