The Labour Party National Transition Committee (LPNTC), a group created by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has said it is not part of the State Congresses that the Labour Party (LP) National Chairman, Julius Abure, announced.
On Friday in Abuja, Tony Akani, who leads the Media and Publicity Subcommittee, shared this in a statement.
Obiora Ifoh, the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, responded by saying the LPNTC is not recognized by the party. He said people should ignore what LPNTC says about the Labour Party.
Akani’s statement aimed to tell everyone in Nigeria, especially Labour Party members, that the Ward, Local Government Area, and State congresses planned by the suspended former acting national chairman, Julius Abure, and his group in places like Anambra, Imo, Edo, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Sokoto, Ondo, Kaduna, and Adamawa are against a court order.
He also said that the planned congresses do not have the support of the Nigeria Electoral Act, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), or the Nigeria Constitution, which are the rules for political parties.
He pointed out that neither INEC, Labour Party leader Peter Obi, nor other important and law-abiding people in the Labour Party went to or recognized the Nnewi convention.
Akani said that INEC and Peter Obi, through his spokesman Yunusa Tanko, have at different times said they don’t agree with the Nnewi convention. Therefore, any decisions made by people claiming to be elected at that event don’t count.
