The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) is teaming up with the Nigeria Postal Service (NIPOST) to make delivering goods cheaper for small businesses in Nigeria.
The boss of SMEDAN, Mr. Charles Odii, shared this news on his X account after meeting with Mrs. Tola Odeyemi, the head of NIPOST.
Mr. Odii said that delivering goods is very expensive for many small businesses in Nigeria. Sometimes, the cost to send a product is higher than the price of the product itself. This is why they decided to meet with NIPOST to find a solution.
They haven’t shared the full details of their plan yet, but Mr. Odii said we should expect good news for small businesses soon.
SMEs’ Delivery Problems
The high cost of delivering goods is a big problem for small businesses in Nigeria. It makes it hard for them to sell more and grow.
“When we talk to small business owners, they always say that the high cost of delivery is a big problem. Sometimes, delivering a product costs more than the product itself. This stops customers from buying and makes it hard for small businesses to grow,” said Mr. Odii.
Mr. Odii met with Mrs. Tola Odeyemi of NIPOST to discuss using NIPOST’s wide network, even in faraway places, to help small businesses with cheaper, faster, and more reliable delivery services.
“We both understand how important good delivery services are for helping our economy grow and creating jobs,” Mr. Odii added.
Both SMEDAN and NIPOST want to work together to solve trust issues and give small businesses better delivery options. This will help them sell more, make their customers happy, and earn more money.

A 2017 study by the National Bureau of Statistics found that there are 41.5 million small and medium businesses in Nigeria, providing jobs to nearly sixty million people. These businesses make up about 46.31% of Nigeria’s GDP and 96% of all businesses in the country.
However, SMEDAN’s boss recently said that around three million small businesses have closed down in recent years due to problems like flooding. Still, SMEDAN is working on many projects to help small businesses survive and grow in Nigeria.
