The indictment of Willie Obiano by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFFC) for the alleged theft of N4 billion from the Anambra State security vote account has been described as a blessing in disguise for the former governor of state.
Obiano’s publicist, Tony Nezianya, said Thursday that the judicial process would allow the former governor to clear himself of accusations against him and his administration.
He said although there could be accusations and rumors surrounding Obiano’s administration, it was important to allow him to clear his name before passing judgement.
Quoting Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN, counsel to the former governor, Nezianya said proper legal process in an arraignment would allow for a fair and impartial examination of the allegations against him.
‘Rather than relying solely on media judgment and social media speculation, it is vital to rely on the judicial system to determine your guilt or innocence.
“Until proven guilty, Chief Willie Obiano should be presumed innocent and given the opportunity to defend himself against the allegations.
“Chief Obiano remained a law-abiding citizen who always responded to an invitation from the EFCC, including the most recent invitation,” he said.
Nezianya said the Anambra International Cargo Airport, Umueri, now known as Chinua Achebe Airport, built by the Obiano administration, was not only an important legacy but also a source of revenue for the state and the country.
He said Mr. Obiano’s efforts in the agricultural sector led to a significant increase in rice production and growth of the agricultural value chain, ensuring food security of the state.

He advised that the airport should function as Mr Obiano had envisioned to become a regional hub in sub-Saharan Africa, adding that the facility had brought peace and unity among the host communities.
Furthermore, he said it was important to recognize and appreciate the achievements and contributions Obiano made during his tenure as governor.
“His people-friendly policies and ‘akulueuno’ campaign have attracted support and funding from influential people in Anambra, further promoting development and empowerment at the grassroots level,” he said.
According to Nezianya, the institutions Obiano developed included Anambra State Promotion, Protection and Investment Agency, Anambra Capital Development, Anambra Small Business Agency and Anambra Transport Management Authority.
“He also gave Anambra an Anthem that serves as the basis of the operational philosophy underpinning the development of Anambra,” he added.
