The Senate on Wednesday suspended its plenary session in honour of a member of the House of Representatives, Olajide Akinremi, who passed away in the early hours of today.
Mr. Akinremi, until his death, represented the Ibadan North Federal Constituency of Oyo and passed away at the age of 51 after a brief illness.
He also served as chairman of the House Committee on Scientific Research Institutes.
After adopting the votes and procedures of Tuesday's plenary, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele moved a motion to suspend the plenary until Thursday to honour the late lawmaker in line with the National Assembly's tradition.
Minority Leader Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South) seconded the motion.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio put the motion to a vote and the majority of lawmakers supported it by verbal votes.
Mr. Akpabio subsequently ordered the suspension of the plenary session.

He then ordered senators to observe a minute of silence in honour of the deceased legislator.
The late lawmaker was first elected to the House in 2019 and won reelection in 2023.
During the House leadership race, he expressed interest in running for vice president, but later withdrew.
Lord Akinremi is the third member of the Tenth House to die.
Abdulkadir Danbuga died in October 2023, while Isa DogonYaro died in May 2024.
