AEDC Threatens to Disconnect Nigeria Defense Headquarters, FCDA and Others

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has said it will disconnect all customers with outstanding electricity bills by Monday, June 3.

This was announced by the AEDC management in a notice titled: “Notice of power outage for customers with outstanding bills” seen by PREMIUM TIMES on Saturday.

“This is to inform the general public that AEDC will disconnect all customers with outstanding electricity bills on June 3, 2024.

“Timely payment of electricity bills is crucial to the continued operation and improvement of AEDC’s infrastructure, ensuring we can provide efficient and reliable service to our community.

“Therefore, we urge all customers in debt to pay all outstanding invoices by the due date to avoid interruption of service,” the company said.

The company listed customers with outstanding invoices including the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force Headquarters, Defense Headquarters, Federal Capital Development Authority, Kogi State Government, State Government of Niger, Nigerian Police Force Headquarters, Nigerian Army Barracks, Power House, SGF House I, Head of Service, Federal Ministry of Education.

Other affected clients include the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, the Federal Ministry of Industry, the Federal Ministry of Commerce, the Federal Ministry of Home Affairs, the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, the National Stadium, the Goodluck Jonathan Athletics Hall, the Ministry Federal Finance and the Federal Ministry of Education. , National Planning Commission (Budget), Federal Ministry of Works, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Abuja and all other clients owing to AEDC.

In a public notice made on Friday by its Head of Marketing and Corporate Communications, Adefisayo Akinsanya, AEDC said the deadline for payment of all outstanding invoices should be within 72 hours of the notice.

In February, the AEDC had threatened to disconnect power supply to the Presidential Villa and the offices of some important government agencies over non-payment of electricity bills.

In a public announcement at the time, AEDC said the government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDA) owe the distribution company N47 billion in unpaid bills for services rendered to them.

In 2013, the Nigerian government handed over ownership of most of the state-owned power company to private buyers.

Since then, distribution companies (DisCos) have struggled to efficiently collect money for the electricity supplied.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian government has budgeted billions of naira to pay electricity bills over the years.

This year, the federal government allocated N40 billion for the “settlement of electricity debts of MDAs”, details of the approved budget show.
