BREAKING: Ibrahim Lamorde, former EFCC chairman, has died

Ibrahim Lamorde, former chairman of anti-corruption agency EFCC, has died. He was 61 years old.

Lamorde died in Egypt, where he had traveled for medical treatment, a close associate told PREMIUM TIMES on Sunday morning.

Born on December 20, 1962, Lamorde joined the Nigeria Police in 1986 and retired as Deputy Inspector General of Police in 2021.

While a police officer, he served as Chairman of the EFCC between 2011 and 2015.

According to his profile on the EFCC website, Mr. Lamorde was the third Executive Chairman of the Commission. He was appointed as Acting Chairman of the Commission on November 3, 2011 following the dismissal of Farida Waziri by President Goodluck Jonathan. He was confirmed as the third substantive chairman of the Commission by the Senate on February 15, 2012.

Mr Lamorde, who was born on December 20, 1962 in Mubi, Adamawa State, attended Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology in 1984. He joined the Nigerian Police in 1986. When the EFCC was created in 2003, Mr. Lamorde was appointed as the pioneer Chief Operating Officer. In December 2007, he assumed the role of Acting President in January 2008, a position he held until Ms. Waziri was appointed President and confirmed by the Senate in June 2008. In December 2010, Mr. Lamorde returned to the EFCC, again as Chief Operating Officer to replace Stephen Otitoju, the then acting chief operating officer.

When Ms Waziri was replaced on November 23, 2011, Mr Lamorde, then Deputy Commissioner of Police (ACP), was again appointed acting president. He was confirmed as substantive chairman of the EFCC on February 15, 2012, a position he held until November 9, 2015, when President Buhari replaced him with Ibrahim Magu as acting chairman of the EFCC.
