Tinubu appoints committee to oversee Nigeria’s climate policies

In a strategic move to ensure the advancement of his administration’s green climate and economic initiatives, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed Ajuri Ngelale as special presidential envoy for climate action.

Ngelale will serve in this role as part of a broader Presidential Committee, which will be chaired by the President.

The Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions, established by the president, will coordinate and oversee all policies and programs on climate action and green economic development.

The Presidential Commission will have, among other functions:

(1) Identify, develop and implement innovative non-oil and gas climate action initiatives.

(2) Coordinate all activities of relevant federal institutions toward achieving all agreed climate actions and green economic goals and non-oil and gas ambitions of the federal government.

(3) Collaborate with all relevant governmental, subnational, non-governmental and civil society entities to achieve the federal government’s climate action goals and ambitions.

(4) Collaborate with national governments and multilateral institutions to achieve the federal government’s climate action goals and carbon market ambitions.

(5) Monitor, evaluate, and guide the progress of all federal government climate action and renewable energy projects and activities.

(6) Follow and guide the implementation of initiatives and developments carried out by the Energy Transition Working Group.

(7) Oversee the work of the Evergreen Project Presidential Steering Committee.

(8) Prepare a semi-annual green ambitions update, covering all associated federal government climate action achievements.

Ngelale will retain his role as official spokesperson to the president and special advisor to the president on media and publicity while serving on the committee.
