Police in Enugu state, southeastern Nigeria, say they have arrested two male suspects for alleged armed robbery in the state.

State police spokesperson Daniel Ndukwe revealed this in a statement on Friday night.

Ndukwe, Deputy Superintendent of Police, identified the suspects as Favor Akabue, 18, and Chiemezie Obayi, 19, both residents of Trans Ekulu area in Enugu East Local Government Area of ​​the state.

Ndukwe said the police received a tip-off that the suspects allegedly used toy guns to snatch a Honda car from an unidentified male victim at around 5:05 am on May 3 at Amaetiti-Akwu, Achi community in the area. of Oji-River local government in the state.

The police spokesperson said the suspects also allegedly robbed the victim of his money, mobile phone and other valuables during the attack.

But he said that upon receiving the tip, police officers serving with the Oji-River Police Division, in collaboration with members of a Neighborhood Watch Group, gave the suspects “an intense chase” and arrested them around 5:20 am on the street. the same day.

Ndukwe said police officers consequently recovered the car snatched from the hoodlums.

The police spokesperson added that two imitation revolver pistols, a syringe containing a liquid substance suspected to be acidic and other evidence were also recovered from the suspects.

He did not specifically confirm whether the stolen valuables were also recovered.

Ndukwe said that in a separate operation on May 7, police detectives working in the Awkunanaw Police Division arrested another armed robbery suspect, David Ogah Bassey, 31, popularly known as Army Onye.

The police spokesperson said the suspect’s arrest came after receiving a report from a tricyclist that a gang of three armed robbers, around 10pm on May 6, had robbed him of his valuables.

The tricyclist, according to the statement, alleged that the suspects diverted him and robbed him of his undisclosed amount of money, mobile phone and other valuables while transporting them to Garriki, Awkunanaw in Enugu South Local Government Area of ​​State.

“Upon leading detectives to the scene of the incident, the suspect saw them and attempted to escape before being caught, and the firearm was recovered,” he said, adding that other members of the criminal gang escaped.

“The victim was able to identify the suspect as one of the same armed gang members who robbed him the night before,” Ndukwe said.

A locally made Beretta type pistol was recovered from the arrested suspect, the police spokesperson said.

He said all arrested suspects will be prosecuted once investigations are completed.
