The Story of Tinuade Sanda, The Ex-MD/CEO Of EKEDC Who Was ‘Fired’ Twice + Facts About Her

Experiencing being fired twice in just one month is quite unusual, but that is the experience of Tinuade Sanda.

The parent company of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), West Power & Gas (WPG), has terminated the appointment of the former Managing Director and Chief Executive of the power distribution company amidst controversy surrounding her removal by EKEDC.

In a letter dated April 17, 2024, and signed by the company’s Chair, Charles Momoh, the news comes after her recall from EKEDC following a controversial removal in March 2024 by the chairman of EKEDC, Dere Otubu.

Before her time at EKEDC, Sanda held various roles at WPG after joining in 2013, eventually moving to EKEDC where she became the MD/CEO in 2022.

1. Tinuade Sanda was born on August 6, 1979.

2. She is the older of two siblings.

3. She holds a degree in accounting from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and a Master’s in Business Administration from the Edinburgh Business School, Heriot-Watt University, Scotland, UK.

4. Prior to her career in the power sector, she worked in banking as a relationship manager with Chartered Bank and later Access Bank.

5. Before joining West Power Gas, she was the head of finance and administration at Vanguard Energy Resources.

6. Sanda played a key role in the acquisition of EKO Disco in 2013.

7. She is a Fellow of multiple professional institutes and holds various memberships in the finance and business sectors.

8. In 2020, she was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in Financial Management & Entrepreneurship.

9. Tinuade Sanda made history as the first female MD/CEO of EKEDC in March 2022.

10. Under her leadership, EKEDC became Nigeria’s leading distribution company within a year.

11. She launched a fast-delivery mass metering program (Mobile MAP Initiative) in Nigeria, providing over 80,832 electricity meters.

12. She currently serves on the power subcommittee for the President of Nigeria.

13. Sanda founded EmHERging, a mentorship platform.

14. She was honored with the Africa Safety Award for Excellence (AfriSAFE) as CEO of the year in 2022.

15. She was ranked among the top 3 most influential personalities in the Nigerian power sector in 2022.
