Amnesty International, on Sunday, said the federal government must stop threatening individuals and groups that criticize the current administration.
“The Nigerian authorities must stop responding with violence and threats to the people and groups that express dissident opinions for contempt for the Nigerian Constitution and international law. Maintaining and expressing dissident views is not a crime ”, the organization in a statement about its Mango X.
He also condemned the alleged threats and intimidation faced by the National Services Corps of the National Service based in Lagos, Ushie Uguamaye.
This followed his viral video of Tiktok, where he criticized the government of President Bola Tinubu about the difficulties that Nigerians face as a result of economic reforms.
The Human Rights guard denounced the reported threats of NYSC officials, emphasizing that Uguamaye had the rights to express their frustration for the economic conditions that worsen the country.
“Amnesty International firmly condemns threats and intimidation aimed at a lady who published a Tiktok video regretting the current economic difficulties. The lady claimed that NYSC officials threatened her for refusing to eliminate the video, ”said the statement.
“It is perfectly within its right to express discontent peacefully. Instead of threatening her for her opinions about unbridled inflation, the authorities must prioritize addressing the country's economic problems.
“Millions of people in Nigeria face extreme poverty. Until now, the authorities have not established effective mitigation measures, leaving millions of people without the hope of getting out of economic challenges and enjoying their human rights. “
