Ten people have been confirmed dead in a fatal road accident that involves a cement truck along the Damaturu-Maiduguri road in the state of Yobe.
The accident occurred yesterday when the truck, loaded with cement and passengers, lost control and fell into a ditch.
According to eyewitness accounts, the truck had 13 passengers on board, with 10 succumb to their wounds in the scene. Three others were transferred to the hospital with various degrees of injuries.
The Public Relations officer of the Yobe State Police Command, Sp Dungus Abdulkarim, who confirmed the incident, said that preliminary investigations revealed that the truck lost the brakes, crashing with a Sharon car at a control point before go out.
“The truck, transporting cement and passengers, lost control and crashed into a ditch.
“Of the 13 passengers on board, 10 died instantly, while the remaining three were transferred to the Damaturu Hospital to receive treatment,” Abdulkarim said.
According to him, the driver of the Sharon car, who was alone at that time, survived the accident, although the vehicle suffered significant damage.
