The president of the United States, Donald Trump, said Wednesday that negotiations to end the Ukraine War will begin “immediately” after celebrating a long and highly productive phone call “with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In a publication about his real social platform, the president of the United States said both agreed that “we want to stop the millions of deaths that take place in the war with Russia/Ukraine.”
The call, which is the first conversation between the presidents since Trump assumed the position last month, occurred when Trump made clear his advisors that he wants to put the Ukrainian conflict until a rapid end.
Trump administration officials said they expected a “exchange” of prisoners to presage renewed efforts to end the war, which he is about to enter his fourth year.
Trump's publication about Truth Social, said: “I just had a long and very productive phone call with President Vladimir Putin in Russia. We discuss Ukraine, the Middle East, energy, artificial intelligence, the power of the dollar and several other issues.
“We both reflect on the great history of our nations, and the fact that we fight with such success in World War II, remembering that Russia lost dozens of millions of people, and we, in the same way, lost so many! Each one talks about the strengths of our respective nations and the great benefit that one day we will have to work together.
“But first, as we both agree, we want to stop the millions of deaths that take place in the war with Russia/Ukraine. President Putin even used my very strong campaign motto of “common sense.” We both believe very strongly in it. We agreed to work together, very closely, even visit the nations of the other. We have also agreed that our respective teams begin the negotiations immediately, and we will begin by calling President Zelenskyy, of Ukraine, to inform him about the conversation, something that I will do at this time.
“I have asked the Secretary of State Marco Rubio, director of the CIA John Ratcliffe, National Security Advisor Michael Waltz and the special ambassador and envoy Steve Witkoff, who leads the negotiations that, I think they will be successful.
“Millions of people have died in a war that would not have happened if I were president, but it happened, so it must end. No more lives should be lost! I want to thank President Putin for his time and effort regarding this call, and for the launch, yesterday, Marc Fogel, a wonderful man who personally greeted last night in the White House. I think this effort will lead to a successful conclusion, hopefully soon!
As US officials travel in Europe this week, they have begun to take clearer positions on how the conclusion of the Ukraine War could see.
Speaking to a conference in Brussels, the Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, said that kyiv joins NATO is not realistic and that the United States will no longer prioritize European and Ukrainian security as the Trump administration changed its attention to ensure the United States borders and dissuade war with China.
Meanwhile, Trump has talked about reaching an agreement with Zelensky from Ukraine for American access to the valuable rare land minerals of the country as payment for continuous American assistance.
Trump spoke with Zelensky Midday, shortly after leaving the phone with Putin.
His predecessor, President Joe Biden, had not spoken with his Russian counterpart in almost three years, believing that there was little to win by speaking with a leader who had considered a war criminal.
The last president of the United States to visit Russia was Barack Obama in 2013 when he attended a G20 summit.
Putin finally visited the United States in 2015 to attend the United Nations conversations.
For his part, the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, said the couple discussed the preparation of a new document on security, economic cooperation and association of resources.
According to the Ukrainian leader, the couple spoke about opportunities to achieve peace and discussed their preparation to work together at the team level.
“Nobody wants peace more than Ukraine,” Zelensky added in an X publication.
