Once ILR was granted, she declared that they would have to wait five additional years before being eligible for a British passport, arguing that the current system allows people to establish too fast, exercising tension in public services.

The conservative party is pressing to apply these changes retroactively to 2021 through amendments to the next border security, asylum and an immigration bill, which will be discussed in Parliament next week.

While many immigrants in work visas, asylum applicants and those in the United Kingdom are already restricted to claim state benefits under the rule of “without appeal to public funds”, Badenoch's proposal aims to further adjust access .

She believed that the system must ensure that only those who have a genuine connection with the United Kingdom and contribute to the economy can be established permanently.

“We need to ensure that people who come here have a real and significant connection with the United Kingdom, without a criminal record, they should be net taxpayers to the economy, not to depend on the benefits but the people who care about our country and our communities “Badenoch told the BBC.
