The initiative for the progress of the cause of albinism (INAAC) has required urgent support on World Cancer Day to combat skin cancer between individuals with albinism in Nigeria.
This is contained in a press release issued by Joy Odigie, Founder, INAAC and is available to journalists.
Odigie said that the appeal highlights the vulnerability of people with albinism, who have a higher risk due to low levels of melanin in their skin, which offers minimal protection against harmful UV rays.
“Currently, INAAC is looking for three people with albinism who fight against skin cancer in the state of Edo, including the 25 -year blessing of OMOKA, who was recently amputated by his leg due to skin cancer complications and requires Help with medical expenses.
“Mrs. Rosemary Umar-Adinoyi also needs support after undergoing surgery for skin cancer and being sent to receive additional treatment at the Teaching Hospital of the University of Lagos (Luth).
“Additiinally, Thankgod Ibhasuemonjie, in his thirty years, is looking for financial help to continue his radiotherapy sessions in Luth”
She emphasized the importance of personalized interventions and community support to improve health results for people with albinism affected by skin cancer.
“INAAC has organized leather and free eye checks for more than 150 people with albinism in the state of Edo in the last three years.
“It also executes a subsidized surgery program to help patients financially, but many more people expect assistance.”
Odigie urged people and organizations to contribute through donations, raise awareness and associate to improve access to medical care.
“We are asking for a donation of sun protection lotions with SPF 50+ to people with albinism to prevent skin cancer as part of organizations' corporate social responsibility activities.
“There should be the establishment of free skin cancer centers in each of the six geographical areas of the country.
“Free cancer treatment for people with albinism at the National Hospital, Abuja should be revived,” Odigie said.
This year's World Cancer Day theme, marked on February 4, is 'united by a single', and underlines the need for personalized attention for those affected by cancer.
