A 54-year-old prophet of the Celestial Church of Christ, Eagle Parish, was shot dead by unknown gunmen in Odo Eran, Idiroko area of Ogun State.
The victim, identified as Yomi Adetula, was shot at around 10:30am on Sunday during a church service and his head was severely damaged by an axe.
Newslodge reported that the three attackers entered the church, took out a double-barreled long gun, opened fire on the victim and then fled the scene.
Confirming the incident to Newslodge, Police Spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, said the victim was found in the pool of blood with his head up.
Odutola said: “The police officers rushed to the scene and saw Yomi Adetula, a man about 54 years old, lifeless in the pool of his own blood staining his heavenly white robe, lying face up.
“After careful observation, his body was riddled with blisters and his head was not pierced with spears, to ensure that the victim was really dead, it was smashed with an axe.
“In the police investigation, information further revealed that three men entered the church, took out a double-barreled long gun, pointed it at their target and fired a shot that felled the deceased.”
Odutola noted that with the efforts of the Idiroko Divisional Police Officer, the body was deposited at the Ilaro General Hospital mortuary.
He said investigations have been launched into the unfortunate incident and efforts are being made to arrest the suspects who fled towards the border area.
