A pregnant woman whose name was identified as Mrs Chidinma has been arrested by agents of the Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG), over an unpaid debt incurred by her husband.

Newslodge reported that the incident occurred in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.

A viral video showed that she was detained at the officers' security office in Okija.

But in what seemed like quick action, the Anambra State Police Command rescued the woman and released her from their detainees.

A press statement by the spokesperson of the state police command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, ordered his immediate release, warning against such abuse of power.

It was learned that before her release, Mrs Chidinma had already spent two days in detention.

Ikenga in his press statement, however, said that the case involving Chidinm's husband bothered to steal.

He said: “The Anambra State Police Command has rescued a pregnant woman allegedly detained over a robbery case by her husband at a security office in Okija.

“The report of the incident was intercepted in a trending video by the state Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, while ordering rescue operations and an investigation into the report.

“The CP disapproves of these acts of indiscriminate detention and inhumane treatment of suspects by some members of the Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG).

“He assured that the root cause of the incidents will be addressed to prevent them from occurring in the future. He also initiated necessary measures with the relevant authorities to curb the excesses of the few non-professional members of AVG in the state,” the statement read.
