The Former Group Managing Directors (GMD) Forum of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has commended the incumbent NNPCL under the leadership of Mele Kyari for transforming the Port Harcourt Refinery (PHR) into a state-of-the-art facility.

The Forum, which took place in Port Harcourt and was led by Dr. Jackson Gaius-Obaseki during an inspection tour, described the recent renovation of the Refinery as a monumental achievement for Nigeria's oil and gas sector, but dismissed the public skepticism calling it a misunderstanding of scale and complexity. of the project.

“This is not the typical turnaround maintenance (TAM) that people are used to hearing about. This was a complete rehabilitation of a plant built in 1965, modernized to become a world-class refinery by 2024. It is an incredible feat that deserves recognition, Gaius-Obaseki said.

Gaius-Obaseki, who also addressed concerns over petrol pump prices, said they are linked to global crude oil costs. The former GMDs called on Nigerians to appreciate the courage and dedication behind the project, saying it is a big step forward for local refining capabilities.

The group, while commending Kyari's leadership, urged him to remain focused on delivering value to Nigerians, adding that the transformation of the Refinery is a testament to the potential of Nigerian ingenuity and resilience.

Chamberlain Oyibo, Funsho Kupolokun and Andrew Yakubu, who were also part of the tour, echoed Gaius-Obaseki's sentiments in saying that the review of the PHR is a historic achievement.
