Five people were killed in a series of shootings in northern France, including near a migrant camp, and a 22-year-old man surrendered to police, French media report.
Four of the victims, two security guards and two migrants, were shot dead near the Loon-Plage migrant camp near Dunkirk, according to anonymous security sources cited in French media.
The suspect later confessed to an earlier shooting in Wormhout, a nearby town, reports indicate.
Weapons were reportedly discovered in the suspect’s vehicle, but his motive remains unclear.
The mayor of Dunkirk, Patrice Vergriete, described the events as a “tragedy” and added: “An individual coldly murdered several people.”
Xavier Bertrand, president of the regional council, confirmed the death toll on social media, calling it a “tragic event.”
The attacks have prompted a major police and emergency response near the Loon-Plage camp, although details about whether the shootings occurred within the settlement remain uncertain.
Loon-Plage, near Calais and the Strait of Dover, is home to several temporary migrant settlements often used by people attempting to cross the English Channel to the UK in small boats.
