Brekete Radio suspends broadcasts in protest against the detention of minors

Human Rights Radio and Television station Brekete Family has announced the suspension of its broadcasting activities in protest of the detention of some minors in connection with the #EndBadGovernance protests.

This was announced by the management of the media house in a statement published in X on Monday.

“Human Rights Radio and Television (Brekete Family) partially closes in protest of the detention of minor children by the Nigerian government.

“This decision reflects our deep commitment to defending the rights of the vulnerable and holding authorities accountable,” the statement read.

The radio station, located in Abuja, is popular in the capital and neighboring states, especially for its morning show, hosted by its owner, Ahmed Isa, affectionately called Ordinary President.

In the city, the radio station is one of the most influential media outlets, particularly for its flagship program called “Brekete Family,” which serves as a kind of informal court on human rights issues, giving voice to aggrieved citizens who They cannot access regular courts. ..

Backstory

Videos showing malnourished children being processed by the police before the Federal High Court in Abuja emerged on social media on Friday. Two of them and two others who were said to be adults collapsed during the process.

The 28 minors are among 76 people arrested by the Nigerian police three months ago in connection with #EndBadGovernance.

Judge Obiora Egwuatu, in his ruling, ordered that minor defendants only require that their “parents or guardians” act as their guarantors.

The judge subsequently ordered the minors to be detained in Borstal Homes until they meet the conditions of their bail.

The court then adjourned the trial until January 24.

The judicial incident sparked outrage among citizens, with many demanding the immediate release of the children and others arrested during the protest.

Civil society organizations and human rights activists criticized the police and the government for the arrest and detention of minors.

PREMIUM TIMES reported that the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, has already ordered the police to transfer the files of the minors to his office for further action.
