The much-anticipated 20th edition of the continental film awards ceremony, the African Film Academy Awards, AMAA, was held on Saturday to a full house.

The board of directors of the African Film Academy (AFA), organizer of the African Film Academy Awards, AMAA, celebrated the 2024 edition amidst pomp and joy at the Balmoral Convention Center in Ikeja, GRA.

The five-hour film awards ceremony was co-produced by Kingsley James and Raymond Anyiam-Osigwe in Lagos, Nigeria.

More than 700 guests from different parts of Africa converged on the venue, and African film professionals, including actors, cinematographers, producers, dressmakers, set designers and more, won 26 awards.

Some of the biggest winners of this memorable night include Nigerian Daniel Oriahi for the film 'The Weekend', Femi Adebayo for 'Jagun Jagun' and South African Jahmil XT Qubeka for 'The Queenstown Kings'.

Ghanaian film star Jackie Appiah faced stiff competition from Girley Jazama, Oyin Oladejo, Unati Faku, Uzoamaka Aniunoh, Laura Pepple and Ife Irele before finally winning the award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in the film “ Red Carpet.”

Anyiam-Osigwe also promised that the family would carry on the legacy of the late Peace Anyiam-Osigwe, who impacted the film industry and African filmmakers before her passing. He highlighted that preparations for the 20th edition began before the death of the founder and promised to continue the alliances created and made since the creation of the continental film award.

Nigeria's Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, led a long list of dignitaries, including captains of industry and film professionals from across Africa and beyond.

Featuring impressive performances from legendary Afrobeat star Femi Kuti and Yinka Davies, the night was illuminated by a long list of Pan-African artists including Narh Tettey, Bedwei Kwaku and Adina Thembi.
