In Ondo State, Nigeria, a political group called the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is worried. They think another group, the All Progressives Congress (APC), plans to use a security team called the Amotekun Corps in a tricky way during the big governor election on November 16.
The PDP got worried because the boss of the Amotekun Corps, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, is now in charge of the security team for the APC’s election plans in the state.
The PDP thinks this means the Amotekun team might act like bullies to scare people during the election. A PDP spokesperson, Ayo Fadaka, said they will not let this happen.
“We are watching what APC is doing, and it looks bad. They’ve been acting suspiciously for weeks. Now, things are getting serious because they put the Amotekun Commander, Chief Tunji Adeleye, in charge of security for the election,” said Fadaka.
“We also know there are secret places around the state where people are gathering to cause trouble. We will give the police and other security groups these locations for them to check out.”
The PDP also believes APC has plans to create safety fears in several local government areas using a method they tried in their own party elections before.
In response, the APC said what the PDP is saying is not true. They say the Amotekun group is professional and only wants to keep people safe. The APC didn’t even make a special security team for the Aiyedatiwa Campaign.
“The PDP is just making up stories about violence and threats, and they’re trying to hide how unprepared they are for the election. We ask security officers to look into these stories and punish any wrongdoers,” said Steve Otaloro from the APC.
