On Monday, the Northern Governors’ Forum, led by Muhammadu Inuwa, who is the Governor of Gombe State, shared their thoughts in a message.
To remind everyone, on October 3, 2024, President Tinubu sent a tax reform plan to the Senate and the House of Representatives to get approval.
This plan wants to make changes, like renaming the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS).
The new tax rules want to give Value Added Tax (VAT) breaks for oil and gas send-offs, crude oil, feed gas, and goods used in charity projects.
After meeting on Monday at the Government House, Kaduna, the Northern States governors and Traditional Rulers Council asked the National Assembly to stop any law that might harm their people.
Governor Sule talked on Channels Television about the VAT plan that made some northern areas upset with Tinubu.
He said, “We chose President Tinubu, and the North worked hard to make him president. We can’t now turn against him.
We are focusing on the VAT part of the plan, and it’s not about opposing anything else. We are concerned about how VAT is shared. We can agree, or we can disagree on this.
We just want the VAT sharing to be fair. If we do it as suggested, some states in the South will feel it is not fair.”
