The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has said that the news about him taking legal action against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is not true. Some stories said that the EFCC wanted to arrest him after his time as governor is over, but he has denied this.
This information was shared by Lawal Pedro, who is the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Lagos State, on a Tuesday.
There were rumors that Sanwo-Olu, through his lawyer named Darlington Ozurumba, had asked a court in Abuja for help against the EFCC.
Clarification
According to a news report, the governor presented some questions and requests in a legal paper filed on June 6.
Sanwo-Olu wanted to confirm that the Constitution of Nigeria gives him the right to live privately with his family, not just while he is governor but all the time. He pointed out that these rights are protected by the Constitution.
The report also said that he believed the EFCC’s threat of arrest was against his rights to freedom and movement as a citizen of Nigeria.
But the Attorney General firmly said that these reports are not true.
“It’s important for everyone to know that Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu never asked anyone to start a lawsuit about this matter for him,” he explained.
“It wouldn’t make sense for him to seek legal help on such an issue when he’s still protected by law as governor for almost three more years.”
“As far as I know and have checked, the EFCC has not been investigating or threatening Mr. Sanwo-Olu or his staff. We are looking into how this misinformation began,” he added.
He praised Mr. Sanwo-Olu for managing public resources wisely and focusing on helping the people in Lagos.
“Therefore, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who is hard at work improving the lives of Lagos residents, has nothing to worry about when he leaves office in May 2027,” he concluded.
He also advised media outlets to carefully check the news they publish.
