Australian University Announces $30,000 Scholarship for Health Research Focused on Intersex Individuals

The University of Sydney has started a new scholarship to help study health for people born with different sex traits, called innate variations of sex characteristics (IVSC).

This scholarship is for the year 2025 and is called the Postgraduate Research Scholarship. It gives money to a student working on a PhD in bioethics or health law.

The DAAD Scholarship says this scholarship gives up to $30,000 each year for up to 3.5 years. The student can join the Interconnect Health Research project, which is trying to make healthcare better for people with IVSC.

Things to Know:

There are different sex traits known as intersex variations, such as:

1. Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome (AIS): People with XY chromosomes might look like females because their bodies don’t respond to male hormones.

2. Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH): This affects hormone-making in the adrenal glands, causing some XX chromosome people to look more masculine.

3. Klinefelter Syndrome: Males with an extra X chromosome (XXY) may have different male traits and might have less fertility.

4. Turner Syndrome: Females with one X chromosome (X0) might have different traits and health problems from most females.

These variations show the diversity in human bodies related to sex traits.

The DAAD says the scholarship includes $30,000 each year, based on how well the student is doing in school.

Students must already be part of or have applied for a PhD program at the University of Sydney, focusing on improving health for people with IVSC.

Interconnect Health Research Project:

• The scholarship student will join Work Package 3 of the project, focusing on creating bioethical frameworks for care models made with input from patients.

This part aims to build and review care models with clinical and peer support, working with Canberra Health Services and InterLink’s support services.

This part involves doing a national survey to learn about the health and well-being needs of people with innate variations of sex characteristics (IVSC).

Work Package 3:

This section will develop bioethical guidelines to ensure fair healthcare access for people at different life stages.
