The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has given importers and agents 30 days to clear containers and vehicles that have been held up at different sites. If these items are not cleared in time, NCS will auction them off, as per the rules set in the NCS Act 2023.
NCS announced this grace period on their website. They told importers and agents to collect their goods before the time is up, or else they will lose them to the Nigerian government.
This announcement comes with a legal notice marked with Suit No: FHC/L/MISC/680/2024, dated October 15, 2024, to make the public aware.
The notice says, “Importers and agents of these overdue goods have 30 days from the notice date to sort out their paperwork and collect their goods. Failing to do so will result in losing them to the government.”
“Be aware that following the NCS Act 2023, any left-over goods will be auctioned immediately after the grace period ends.”

NCS has seen many goods such as containers and vehicles stacking up because they were not claimed on time at ports. This creates problems, like less space at these areas.
- Goods are called “overtime” if not picked up within 30 days at airports or 90 days at seaports. When this happens, ports get crowded, complicating Nigeria’s transport system and costing more for officials to manage goods.
- Historically, selling these untouched goods helped Customs recover money and clear space. But people have complained about unfairness and lack of transparency in the auction process.
- In early 2024, the Customs Service introduced a new e-auction platform for a better and honest auctioning system. This platform, started on January 15, 2024, aims to be fairer and easier for everyone.
- To join the auction, you need a Tax Identification Number (TIN) from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS). You should check this TIN on the TaxPro Max platform, which ensures you’ve fulfilled tax obligations to qualify.
- Participants must also have an active email for signing up on the portal, to stay informed throughout the auction process.
