Warner Bros. has a new Joker movie called “Joker: Folie à Deux.” It just started showing in Nigerian cinemas on October 4, 2024, and made N43.3 million so far.
But, the movie isn’t doing as well as people thought it would. Both in Nigeria and around the world, it’s not earning as much money as expected.
In its second weekend in Nigeria, from October 11-13, 2024, the movie only earned N11.1 million, which is way less than the N32 million it made during its first weekend. This shows that people aren’t going to see it as much now.
Over in the United States, the movie made $20 million from 4,102 theatres, including early shows. People thought it would make between $50 million and $65 million at its start, but that did not happen.
Even though “Joker: Folie à Deux” was the top movie at the time in the United States, it wasn’t as popular as the first Joker movie from 2019, which made $96.2 million just in its first weekend.

The new Joker movie cost a lot more to make than the first one. The 2019 Joker movie cost about $65 million, which is not much compared to the $200 million spent on this new one.
The costs went up because they paid the actors more, needed more things for the movie, and added music parts to the story. Joaquin Phoenix, who plays the main character, got paid a lot more this time. So did Lady Gaga, who plays Harley Quinn.
Having famous actors and making the movie like a musical made it more expensive. They also needed lots of special effects and designed everything to give it a cool, dark look, which added to the cost.
Even though they spent more money and added new characters like Harley Quinn, “Joker: Folie à Deux” hasn’t been as successful as the first movie.
This film is different because it’s a musical and talks about love in a strange way. Joaquin Phoenix plays Arthur Fleck, a Joker, again. Lady Gaga plays Harley Quinn. Other actors like Brendan Gleeson, Harry Lawtey, and Catherine Keener are in the movie too.
The story is about Arthur Fleck going deeper into his craziness. Harley Quinn is a new character who also stays in the Arkham State Hospital and falls in love with Joker. Still, a lot of people watched it but didn’t like how the story goes, the mood of the movie, and how it made them feel.
Now, Warner Bros. is hoping to get more money from digital and streaming platforms since the box office earnings were less than expected. They have planned a date for when it will be available for people to watch at home. They’re hoping these digital sales will make up for the money they spent on making the movie.
