The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has shared new times for how long it takes to handle citizenship and immigration papers.
Immigration News Canada (INC) says that the IRCC updates these times often. This helps everyone know what to expect. They share new times every month for becoming a citizen, family sponsorship, and economic immigration. For temporary residency and PR cards, times are shared weekly.

How Long It Takes to Become a Citizen
There are some big changes to how long it takes to become a citizen. As of October 8th, if you apply for a Citizenship Grant, it’s about six months, which is one month less than before.
Getting a Citizenship Certificate now takes four months. That’s one month longer than last time. Here are other important times:
- Giving up Citizenship: 16 months (no change)
- Searching Citizenship Records: 12 months (up by one month)
INC says the IRCC is now sending letters to people who applied for citizenship during the week of September 20th, 2024. These letters say that the IRCC got their application.
How Long It Takes for a Permanent Resident Card
The new times for getting a Permanent Resident (PR) card came out on October 1st. Getting a new PR card now takes 26 days. That’s one day more than before.
Renewing a PR card is a bit faster now, taking 69 days, which is one day less.
How Long It Takes for Family Sponsorship
The times for family sponsorship haven’t really changed much this time around.
If you’re applying from outside Canada to sponsor your spouse or common-law partner, it still takes 10 months. Inside Canada, it takes 13 months. Other times to note are:
- Parents/Grandparents (Outside Quebec): 24 months (no change)
- Parents/Grandparents (Quebec): 48 months (no change)

How Long It Takes for Economic and Temporary Residency
The times for economic immigration programs are steady with this update.
If you apply through the Canadian Experience Class or the Federal Skilled Worker Program, it takes five months. But for the Quebec Business Class, it’s now 49 months.
For temporary residency, times vary based on where you’re from. For example, if you’re applying for a visitor visa from India, it’s now 105 days, up by three days. However, for people from the United States, it takes 32 days, which is two days less.
