Something bad happened in Bature, a town in Ondo State, Nigeria. People are upset because they say the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, or NSCDC, killed a young leader in the town. Let’s talk about what everyone is saying.
The townspeople say that Eric Faturoti, who was loved by many, died after NSCDC officers came to their town. They say these officers did a raid that wasn’t allowed.
A person living there, who didn’t want to say their name, mentioned that an NSCDC officer claimed they were acting on orders from a person named Olugbenga Atiba. Mr. Atiba works with the governor of Ondo State, taking care of security issues.
This person explained that the officers came with their guns, trying to arrest someone. The townspeople didn’t agree with what was happening, and during this fight, Eric was killed.
The people of Bature are asking Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to look into what happened. They want justice for Eric’s death. They’ve even said that if nothing is done, they might block important roads in Odigbo as a way to show their anger and demand justice.
The NSCDC spokesperson, Daniel Aidamenbor, said that what the townspeople are saying is not true. He explained that the officers were there to catch people they thought were doing something illegal with the land.
Mr. Aidamenbor mentioned, “There was shooting, and sadly, someone died. But it was because the officers were attacked, and they needed to protect themselves.”
Olugbenga Atiba, who some people blamed, said he had nothing to do with this. He stressed, “I wasn’t even in Ondo State when this happened. I didn’t tell anyone to go to the town and cause trouble.”
Mr. Atiba further said that he’s only involved in gathering information to help keep people safe and not to create problems. He promised that they would look into what really happened and warned the townspeople not to take the law into their own hands. He assured that if someone did something wrong, they would face the consequences.
