Atiku Abubakar, who used to be a Vice President, is supporting the governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, for the local government elections happening on Saturday.
Atiku believes this election is a hopeful event, bringing new energy to democracy in the country.
Right now, there is some political tension in Rivers State because of this planned election on Saturday.
Sharing his thoughts on his X account this Friday, Atiku, who was the choice for president from the Peoples Democratic Party in the last election, said this election is a chance to respect what the Supreme Court decided about local government independence.
Atiku praised Governor Fubara for his brave leadership by making sure the local government elections occur in Rivers State.
He said: “The local government elections happening tomorrow in Rivers State are a hopeful sign, giving fresh energy to our democratic constitution at the heart of government. These elections are a chance to follow the Supreme Court’s decision on local government independence, bringing life to the basic principles of our country.
“Clearly, this election shows a strong support for our laws and fair rules. It should encourage everyone who cares about democracy to come together and make sure people can choose their leaders freely and fairly.
“I praise the bold leadership of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, @SimFubaraKSC, for making sure these local government elections are happening in Rivers State. I also ask everyone living there to participate calmly and responsibly when they vote, choosing the leaders for their local areas.
