Hunger Strike in Rivers Faces Setback as Thugs Disrupt Protest

Must Read

In Port Harcourt, a big city in Rivers State, there was a plan for a protest against hunger and bad government. But something sad happened.

People from the police and other security groups, along with some rough-looking men who acted mean, stopped the protesters from gathering. These rough men might be connected to politics.

According to DAILY POST, the security forces and these rough men first went to Pleasure Park. This park was where the protest was supposed to start, but the security groups told everyone to leave.

After that, they went to a place called Rumuokwuta. Here, they caught some people who were in charge of the protest.

Then, they moved to Waterlines and the Federal Secretariat on Aba Road. In these places, some rough men with sticks were guarding and scaring away anyone who looked like they were there to protest.

One protest leader, Andy Akportive, had to hide. He talked to news reporters and said what the police and other groups did was very disappointing. He said it was sad the government was stopping peaceful protests.

Andy also said that it was worrying that young people, who should be fighting for better government, were being used by the government to stop the protests instead of joining them to ask for better things.

He said, “Today, we came out to do our protest here in Rivers State. Two months ago, we told the government that enough is enough, but they did not listen.

“The people need a break from all the hardships. They want to live better lives in their own country, a place that belongs to everyone.

“Nobody is more important than others. We all have equal rights to be here and to have good leaders.

“So, we came out today to protest, but the government and some mean-looking guys tried to stop us.

“But we won’t give up.” Andy added.

He also said that their group will make new plans and continue the protest. He asked all young people to join their fight to make the government better.
