The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, confirmed that eight young girls trafficked to Ghana have been rescued.
Abike Dabiri-Erewa welcomed the girls at the NiDCOM office in Lagos. She said the girls have been given to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP). NAPTIP will make sure the girls have safe places to stay and help them return to their families.
The girls are between 15 and 22 years old. They come from different parts of Nigeria like Ebonyi, Akwa-Ibom, Imo, Plateau, and Cross River.
The girls were tricked into going to Ghana. They were promised jobs but were instead forced into doing bad things.
Abike also said that many more people are still waiting to be rescued. She thanked the Ghanaian security teams for their help.
Meanwhile, a 28-year-old Nigerian named Favour Ugwu was one of the traffickers. He was caught and given an eight-year jail sentence by a Ghanaian court for human trafficking.
