Two women won the top seats and 14 won deputy seats in the recent local elections in Imo State.

Nkechi Mbonu became the chairman for Okigwe LGA, and Chika Ibekwe won for Ngor-Okpala LGA.

The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) gave out certificates to the new leaders of the 27 local councils in the state on Wednesday.

Charles Ejiogu, the head of the state electoral commission, said that giving out the certificates follows the law that created the Commission.

He mentioned that certificates for the newly elected councilors will be given soon.

“Observers said the election was peaceful, free, fair, transparent, and credible,” he stated.

The ISIEC leader thanked the voters for their patience and support, as well as Governor Hope Uzodinma for making it possible to hold the elections.

He also thanked the security forces, the media, and the 17 political parties that took part for their help.

Nkechi Mbonu, the new chairman for Okigwe LGA, thanked the people of Okigwe for giving her the chance to serve.

She promised to bring growth to the area with new ideas.

It is worth noting that the All Progressives Congress (APC) won all the seats in the 27 council areas and 305 electoral wards in the election held on Saturday, September 21.

Some opposition parties did not accept the results and asked for the election to be canceled.
