Kano LG Election: Court Stops Political Parties from Preventing KANSIEC’s Nomination Fee Collection

Must Read

Before the local elections in Kano State set for October 2024, there has been some fuss. The All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and 19 other parties are not happy. So, the Kano State High Court told them not to stop the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) from collecting nomination fees from people who want to run for office.

KANSIEC had asked for nomination fees: N10 million for those running for chairmanship and N5 million for those running for councillorship. The political parties thought this was too much money and protested.

Because of the protests, the case went to court. The political parties argued that the fees should be lower and there wasn’t much time before the election in October.

The court listened to Rilwanu Umar Esq., R.I. Yaura Esq., and Mustapha Oseni Esq., who represented the protesting parties. After hearing both sides, the court decided to let KANSIEC continue with their work. The parties were told not to do anything that would stop the electoral body from organizing and supervising the elections.

This means that preparations for the October elections can go on without any interruptions for now. The court will have another hearing on October 10, 2024, to discuss the matter further.
