Chude Jideonwo Asserts that Nigeria’s Leading Filmmakers are Predominantly Yoruba

Must Read

Chude Jideonwo, a well-known media personality, says that Nigeria’s top filmmakers mostly come from the Yoruba community.

He talked about how Yoruba filmmakers dominate the Nigerian movie industry.

On Instagram, Jideonwo shared some popular names like Toyin Abraham, Kemi Adetiba, Funke Akindele, Mo Abudu, Kunle Afolayan, and Femi Adebayo as examples.

He explained that Yoruba movies are the most seen on global streaming platforms. He mentioned that it’s hard to find Hausa and Igbo-language films on these platforms.

He said, “The biggest filmmakers in Nigeria now are all from the Yoruba community. Just think about Kemi Adetiba, Jade Osiberu, Mo Abudu, Kunle Afolayan, Kayode Kasum, Toyin Abraham, Funke Akindele, Mercy Aigbe, and Oga Bello’s son who is involved in every movie, including ‘Beast of Two Worlds’ and ‘Jagun Jagun’, and Bolanle Austin-Peters.

“Most of the big cinema and streaming movies are made by Yoruba people. The powerful Yoruba filming culture has blended with other groups to lead again.

“Can you name any Hausa or Igbo-language movie on Netflix or Amazon? The closest in recent years was Genevieve’s ‘Lionheart’, which was a long time ago. Only Yoruba movies are succeeding on Netflix and Amazon becoming big cultural hits.”
