Adamawa government confirms 12 deaths from cholera outbreak

Must Read

The Adamawa State government on Sunday confirmed the outbreak of cholera with 12 deaths recorded.

Health Commissioner Felix Tangwami, who confirmed the outbreak in a statement in Yola, the state capital, said out of 50 samples of suspected cases, 30 were positive.

Mr Tangwami said six of the deaths were recorded at the facility, six occurred at home, while around 308 people were admitted and 244 treated and discharged.

“On behalf of the state governor, I wish to inform everyone that we have received the results of the samples sent to NCDC for confirmation. It has been confirmed that this is acute watery diarrhoea or cholera.

“Unfortunately, out of the 50 samples sent to the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) in Abuja, 30 samples tested positive for cholera, six tested negative, two are still ongoing and 12 are still pending in isolation.

“With these results I want to confirm to the public that there is a cholera outbreak in Adamawa.

“People should be careful about their movements, interactions, personal hygiene and the source of water they drink.

“The public is assured that the government, through its health workers, is doing everything possible by the grace of God to contain the situation as was done in the past with other similar outbreaks.

“We ask people to continue to pray for us as we face this monster. To remain calm and cooperate with the health workers who are doing their job to raise awareness and give professional advice,” he said.
