The new head of the Labour Party’s National Caretaker Committee, Senator Nenadi Esther Usman, is ready to make the Labour Party strong again, even with the problems the party is facing now.
At the committee’s first meeting in Abuja on Friday, Nenadi said she wants to make the Labour Party a real choice for the people of Nigeria.
She asked the committee members to work hard and be honest. She said it’s very important for both the party and the country.
Senator Nenadi told the members that they need to save the Labour Party and Nigeria. She pointed out that many people are interested in what the committee is doing, which gives them a big responsibility.
She said, “With God’s help, the Labour Party will become a place for all Nigerians who feel left out or unhappy with how things are going right now.”
Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, who ran for vice president for the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, agreed with her.
Speaking for the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, he talked about Nigeria’s money problems, saying the Labour Party had warned about the problems under the All Progressives Congress (APC) government.
Baba-Ahmed believes the Labour Party will do even better in future elections, like getting more seats in the National Assembly and winning the presidency in 2027.
He said the party faced problems while changing leadership but handled them successfully, something not many parties of their size could have done.
He added, “We are very strong in Africa. We fought for our 10 million votes even though we only got official recognition for 6 million.”
He talked about worries over Nigeria’s condition, like bad management of resources, security problems, and increasing hunger.
He blamed these problems on poor governance after the Labour Party’s election wins.
Ikechukwu Emetu, the deputy governor of Abia State, spoke on behalf of Governor Alex Otti. He advised the committee members to focus on making the Labour Party grow and avoid doing things that could hurt the party.
Senator Darlington Nwokocha, the committee’s secretary, promised that the committee members would work hard to choose new party leaders at different levels during their term.
He said, “We have already started this process and we are committed to talking to people thoroughly to ensure that good leaders are chosen from the grassroots to the national convention.”
