The Lagos State Government has shut down Idera Market in Oshodi because the market was dirty and not following environmental rules.
The Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) did the closing during their regular checks to make sure all markets in the state are clean.
The head of LAGESC, Major Olaniyi Olatunbosun Cole, said his team found a lot of litter, dirty conditions, and trash everywhere in Idera Market. So, they decided to close it until further notice.
Ajayi Lukman, the Head of Public Affairs and Advocacy at LAGESC, shared this news on their official X (formerly Twitter) account.
“We are working hard to keep all markets in Lagos clean. This is why we shut down Idera Market in Oshodi on Thursday because they were not following the rules,” said Major Cole.
“Our officers saw a lot of dirt and trash around Idera Market during their routine checks. This is why we had to close the market until it gets cleaned up,” he added.
Major Cole said he is worried about the dirtiness in the market because it could make people sick. He said it is important for markets to stay clean so that diseases do not spread.
The market leaders did not have a contract for proper trash collection, which led to the pile-up of garbage. Cole warned all markets that LAGESC officers are watching, and any market that is not clean will be shut down until it meets the required hygiene standards.

In the past few months, the Lagos State Government has closed several big markets like Mile 12, Ladipo, and Oyingbo because they were also not following cleanliness rules.
These markets were reopened only after they met the government’s strict hygiene standards.
Not just markets, but also some businesses like fast food places and restaurants have been shut down for not keeping clean. For example, Cravings & More, a fast food outlet along Egbeda-Idimu Road, was closed because it was dumping waste into public drains after receiving many complaints.
The Lagos State Government says it will keep working hard to make sure everyone follows the environmental laws to keep the state clean.
