The Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) is worried because three political parties did not properly choose their candidates for the upcoming local elections.
Hashim Abioye, the chairman of OSSIEC, said the political parties involved are the All Progressives Congress (APC), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), and Action Peoples Party (APP).
The local government elections in Osun State are set for February 22, 2025.
On Wednesday, while talking to journalists in Osogbo, Hashim Abioye shared a report. He explained that most of the 18 political parties had problems with their candidate nominations.
He mentioned that these parties did not correctly nominate candidates for chairmanship positions in seven local government areas.
He said there were differences between the names of the candidates given by the parties and the names on the official nomination forms.
To check everything, they used a list to make sure every candidate is the right age, has the right education, pays taxes, and follows the nomination and sponsorship rules.
APC, APM, and APP, did not follow the steps needed to replace candidates correctly.
Any changes made to the candidates without following the right steps or without submitting the correct forms would not be accepted.
Kola Olabisi, a spokesperson for the APC, said the party has not received the report yet.
He said that APC will look at OSSIEC’s findings carefully before deciding what to do next.
Olabisi also mentioned, “We follow the law. We will check the report to make sure it is fair and not meant to harm anyone.”
