The Osun State Police have caught some people they believe belong to a banned group called Yoruba Nation.
A police spokesperson named Giwa-Alade Emmanuel shared this news with reporters on Wednesday when showing the suspects at the police headquarters in Osogbo.
The people caught are 61-year-old Fagbayi Oluwafemi, 63-year-old Joy Faseyeku, and 64-year-old Alabede Janet.
Emmanuel said these three were caught because they were planning something illegal, meeting without permission, and talking about breaking away from Nigeria at Obada Market in Ikire. They were telling market traders to join and support Yoruba Nation.
The police spokesperson also said that these people were telling others to stop being part of Nigeria.
On August 27, 2024, around 2 PM, the police got good information. The police officers from Ikire went to Obada Market and caught Fagbayi Oluwafemi, who is from Akure, Ondo State, telling people to support Yoruba Nation and showing the group’s flag. After asking him some questions, they sent the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department.
Later, through more investigation, police also caught Joy Faseyeku in Osogbo and Alabede Janet in Ikire for being involved in the same activity.
The police found some items with them like the Yoruba Nation flag, a tripod stand, a megaphone, two mobile phones, some handbills, and a baseball cap with Yoruba Nation written on it.
The police finished their investigation and have taken these suspects to the Federal High Court for trial.
