The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) shared that their team in Uyo caught five Chinese people for suspected illegal mining at Ndito-Eka-Iba village in Akwa Ibom State.

EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, said this in a statement on Sunday. He mentioned that the Commission’s Special Task Force arrested the suspects on August 29 and September 10.

The suspects are named Zhon Qinping, Li Yi, Xie Bin, Chen Mou Zhou, and Chen Zeng. They were caught at a mining site where they were suspected to be illegally extracting ilmenite, a mineral made of titanium and iron found in Ibeno.

Oyewale added that after the investigation is over, the suspects will be taken to court.

Parts of the statement read, “Our team from the Uyo office of the EFCC has arrested five Chinese nationals for illegal mining in Ndito-Eka-Iba village, Akwa Ibom State.

“These five individuals were caught by the ‘Special Task Force on Illegal Mining’ at our Uyo office. We got solid information about illegal activity by foreign mining companies in Eket and Ibeno areas of Akwa Ibom State.

“They were found at an illegal mining site where they were suspected to be mining ilmenite, a titanium-iron oxide mineral.”
