The Edo Queens soccer team received a big reward – 100 million naira! They won the 2024 WAFU B CAF Women’s Champions League qualifiers.
The Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, shared this happy news during a special party for the team in Benin City.
Governor Obaseki said, “You have done an amazing job. This is a moment to celebrate. Today, Edo State is 33 years old.”
He added, “Seeing the gift you have brought makes me so happy.
“Before we took charge, people didn’t respect Edo women’s soccer. But things have changed a lot now.
“In the past, some leaders didn’t understand how important sports are for young people, but we do.
“I am glad our efforts over the past eight years are paying off. We will keep supporting our young people.
“Congratulations to you, girls. Keep aiming for the CAF Champions League. I won’t tell you all my plans yet, but know you have made us and Nigeria very proud. So here is one hundred million naira for you all.”
Coach Moses Aduku’s team won 3-0 against Ainonvi FC, a team from Benin, in the final match at Stade de la Paix on Sunday.
Later this year, Edo Queens will play in the CAF Women’s Champions League, a big soccer event.
