Deadpool & Wolverine Surges to N420 Million at Nigerian Box Offices

Must Read

Disney’s Marvel superhero movies, Deadpool and Wolverine, did really well in Nigerian cinemas. They sold tickets worth N420 million!

This shows that Hollywood movies are still very popular in Nigeria.

Last week, Newslodge reported that Deadpool, starring Ryan Reynolds, made N300 million in just two weeks.

This is the third Deadpool movie, and people love it because they already like the characters and the story.

Even though Nigeria has economic challenges, the movie did well and was distributed by FilmOne Entertainment. Globally, it earned more than N1 billion.

The movie was directed by Shawn Levy, with a screenplay he co-wrote with Ryan Reynolds and others. It is the 34th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and follows Deadpool (2016) and Deadpool 2 (2018).

Ryan Reynolds plays Wade Wilson/Deadpool and Hugh Jackman plays Logan/Wolverine. The cast also includes Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, and Matthew Macfadyen.

What we know

Hollywood movies are doing great in Nigeria. For example, Bad Boys 4 made N454 million in Nigerian cinemas with more than 88,000 tickets sold. The film stars Will Smith and is very popular in Nigeria.

Another Hollywood movie, It Ends With Us, based on Colleen Hoover’s book and starring Blake Lively, also did well. In the U.S., it made about $50 million domestically, but in Nigeria, it earned N6.4 million on its opening weekend.

In August, many movies did well in Nigeria. The animated movie Inside Out 2 made N97 million in Nigerian cinemas. Globally, it crossed the $1 billion mark, beating last year’s record set by Barbie. With a budget of $200 million, Inside Out 2 is close to making $1.6 billion and is the 10th highest-grossing movie ever. It may soon pass the $1.64 billion made by The Lion King remake.

These numbers show a positive trend for Nigerian cinemas. International blockbusters are attracting large audiences and making a lot of money. Deadpool and Wolverine’s success in Nigeria proves that superhero movies are still very popular.

What to know

More Hollywood movies will come to Nigerian cinemas towards the end of the year.

In 2016, Moana made a big splash at the box office with $687.2 million. People still love it, and Disney CEO Bob Iger said it has been streamed for more than 1 billion hours on Disney+. Because of its success, there will be a Moana 2.

Moana is still popular in 2024, just as it was in 2016. Its success in cinemas and on streaming platforms shows how important it is to watch new Disney movies in theaters. This mindset will help bring people to see Moana 2. With Wicked: Part One’s release pushed back, the family-friendly Moana 2 is expected to lead the box office during its Thanksgiving opening weekend and continue to do well through December and into 2025.
