The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Abia State said that a bad car accident happened at Arongwa village, near Arab Contractors Construction Company, along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway on Wednesday. This sad event led to eleven people losing their lives, and eight more people got badly hurt.
This terrible crash came just three days after another accident that happened on Sunday, which sadly took the lives of some children and adults. The FRSC said that the Sunday crash happened because the driver was tired.
In the statement signed by Commander Ngozi Ezeoma, the FRSC explained that the accident on Wednesday happened at 12:45 PM. It involved a white Nissan Caravan commercial bus with 19 people on board (8 men and 11 women) traveling to Enugu. Sadly, it crashed into a large HOWO commercial truck.
The FRSC teams from two nearby units got to the accident spot within 5 minutes. They quickly began helping the people involved in the crash.
“When we got there, 10 people were hurt (5 men and 5 women), and 9 people (4 men and 5 women) had died on the spot,” the statement said.
The injured people were sent to Ronald Hospital in Umuikaa and Living Word Hospital in Aba. The bodies of the people who died were taken to Alanwemadu and Peace Mortuary in Aba.
Later, when FRSC officers checked on the injured at the hospital, they found out that one more man and one more woman had died, bringing the total deaths to eleven people (5 men and 6 women). Eight people (4 men and 4 women) were still injured. One of these injured people had to be sent to the Federal Medical Centre in Umuahia for more treatment.
The FRSC said that their early investigation showed that the crash happened because the bus was going too fast. They promised to give more updates once their investigators finish looking into what exactly caused the accident.
